Oud is highly valued for its unique and pleasant aroma. It's a rich, fragrant, and woody ingredient that gives a dark and intense woody note in perfumes Purification.
The pure oud oil is left in open sunlight to evaporate any excess moisture.
Oud, also known as agarwood, is a rare and valuable resinous wood that comes from the Aquilaria tree when it's infected by a specific type of mold or fungus.
1. Infection:
The tree, which is native to Southeast Asia, India, and Bangladesh, is damaged by environmental forces. In response, it produces a dark, oily resin to protect its core. The resin becomes impregnated with the mold and eventually hardens into the wood.

2. Harvesting:
The tree is harvested when the resin is at its peak. It's believed that only one in every ten trees in the wild will have an infected heartwood, and only one in a hundred will contain the precious resin. Expert perfumers seek out older trees because the resin's aroma is richer.

3. Extraction:
The resin is extracted from the wood using a variety of methods, including distillation or melting. Water- or hydro-distillation is common in India, Thailand, and Cambodia, while forced steam distillation is more common in Indonesia. These techniques help extract the distinct aromas of the final oud oils.

Oud has long been used as incense during religious ceremonies and special occasions. The aromatic smoke produced from its burning is believed to cleanse the air and create an auspicious environment - its importance having been passed down through generations within Arab households.
The Prophet Muhammed is said to have used oud to incense his clothes and made reference to agarwood's special place in Paradise. Agarwood is mentioned several times in the bible. The Pharisee, Nicodemus, is described as wrapping Jesus' body after the Crucifixion with linen and spices.
The main reason oud is so expensive is its rarity; not every tree gets infected with mould and thus emits the rich resin.
A genuine, 100% pure oud oil possesses a very powerful yet subtle and spiritual aroma.
Skilled labor is required to extract the resin without damaging the tree. The entire process can take several months to years to yield a sufficient amount of quality oud.
Oud is more than a fragrance; it's a living tradition. It's used in religious rituals, ceremonies, and as a mark of hospitality. The warm embrace of Oud welcomes guests into many Arabic households.
Gram for gram, agarwood, also known as oud and prized for its heady scent used for centuries in incense, is the most valuable wildlife commodity on the planet – worth up to 40 times more than gold.
